A legal storm is brewing in Zimbabwe as Sir Wicknell Chivayo faces a potentially career-defining showdown with his former partner, Sonja Madzikanda, in what could become one of the country’s most explosive divorce battles.

Madzikanda is demanding a staggering US$25 million lump sum, seven luxury vehicles — including three Rolls-Royces — and prime real estate stretching from Gletwyn in Harare to Sandton in Johannesburg. On top of that, she reportedly seeks US$40,000 monthly in spousal support.

The case hinges on a single, burning question: Did their seven-year relationship legally qualify as a civil partnership under Zimbabwean law? Madzikanda insists it did, invoking the Marriages Act [Chapter 5:17] to claim her right to a fair share of Chivayo’s sprawling assets.

Chivayo, however, is pushing back fiercely. He maintains there is no formal marriage, arguing the union was an unregistered customary arrangement, a position that, if upheld, could drastically limit Madzikanda’s claims.

Complicating matters is a high-profile dispute over a private jet allegedly gifted to Chivayo’s current wife. Madzikanda claims the aircraft was purchased via a company where both were listed as directors, potentially opening the door to corporate law scrutiny over whether assets were illegally shifted out of joint ownership.

Legal analysts warn that if the claims gain traction, Chivayo could be forced into a full asset disclosure, exposing his offshore holdings, luxury properties, and business interests to public scrutiny for the first time.

This isn’t just a domestic dispute. It’s a test of Zimbabwean law on civil partnerships and a potential landmark case for high-net-worth separations, offshore wealth, and corporate governance.

For now, both sides remain publicly tight-lipped, but with deadlines looming and massive claims on the table, the nation watches closely as one of Zimbabwe’s most flamboyant businessmen could see his empire exposed in court.
