Xenophobic attacks in South Africa cause diplomatic tension with Ghana

Diplomatic tensions are escalating between Ghana and South Africa following a wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in parts of South Africa.

Earlier today, Ghana summoned Thando Dalamba, the Acting South African High Commissioner to Accra, where officials delivered a strong condemnation of what they described as continuous and unacceptable attacks on Ghanaians and other Africans.

During the meeting, the Government of Ghana urged South African authorities to take decisive action to protect the human rights and dignity of foreign nationals. Accra also called for swift investigations into the attacks and demanded that those responsible be punished to serve as a deterrent against further violence.

Ghanaian officials indicated that additional diplomatic steps may be taken if the situation does not improve, signaling growing frustration over the recurring nature of xenophobic violence in South Africa.

The latest developments add pressure on Pretoria to address longstanding concerns over the safety of migrants, as repeated outbreaks of xenophobic attacks continue to strain relations with other African nations and threaten regional solidarity.
