Senegal passes a law to tighten fight against the LGBTQ Community
Senegal- President of Senegal Bassirou Diomaye Faye has enacted a highly controversial law in Senegal that significantly toughens penalties related to same-sex relations, marking a major shift in the country’s legal and political landscape.
The new legislation, passed with overwhelming support in parliament, increases prison sentences for same-sex relations to up to 10 years and introduces penalties for what authorities term the “promotion” of homosexuality.
This includes individuals accused of supporting, advocating, or financing LGBTQ+ activities, who now face potential jail time and heavier fines.
During their campaign in 2024, the 46 year old president and his Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko promised to tighten screw on the same sex relationship within the country.
However, the law has sparked strong international backlash. Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has condemned the measure, warning that it undermines fundamental freedoms such as dignity, privacy, and freedom of expression. Human rights organizations globally argue that such laws risk legitimizing discrimination and increasing vulnerability for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Despite the criticism, the Senegalese government appears resolute, pointing to widespread domestic support for stricter regulations as justification for the crackdown.
