Four Murders, Four Life Sentences: Zimbabwe Court Punishes Former Detective
A Zimbabwean court has handed former police detective Jaison Muvevi four life sentences plus an additional 40 years in prison after convicting him of four counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder in one of the country’s most shocking criminal cases in recent years.
Justice Gibson Mandaza delivered the sentence at the Harare High Court following Muvevi’s conviction over a deadly shooting spree that left four people dead and several others injured across Harare, Wedza and parts of Manicaland between 2022 and 2023.
Among those killed was Inspector Maxwell Hove, a police officer stationed in Wedza, whose death sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe’s law enforcement community. The other victims were identified as Crispen Mubvana, Munashe Mujanhi and Nyarai Round.
The case drew widespread regional attention because Muvevi himself once served as a police detective before allegedly turning into a fugitive linked to multiple violent attacks. Prosecutors described the shootings as calculated and ruthless, with several survivors also testifying during the trial.
During court proceedings, Muvevi pleaded not guilty and attempted to use an insanity defence, telling the court he had been haunted by “evil spirits and goblins” at the time of the killings. His lawyers argued that he was mentally unstable and requested a special verdict, but the court rejected the application after psychiatric evaluations reportedly declared him fit to stand trial.
Muvevi was eventually arrested in neighbouring Mozambique after an international manhunt before being extradited back to Zimbabwe to face trial.
The sentencing has been widely viewed as a major victory for the victims’ families and a significant moment for Zimbabwe’s justice system, with many seeing the judgment as a strong warning against violent crime regardless of status or former position in society.
