Botswana President Duma Boko Arrives for Key BNC Talks and ZITF Opening

Botswana President Advocate Duma Boko touched down in Harare this afternoon, commencing a significant three-day state visit that underscores the deepening ties between the two neighbouring nations. Upon arrival, he was hosted to a State banquet by President Mnangagwa, a diplomatic gesture reflecting the strong relationship between Harare and Gaborone. The centrepiece of his visit will be the Fifth Session of the Zimbabwe-Botswana Bi-National Commission (BNC), which he will co-preside over with President Mnangagwa tomorrow.

The high-level BNC follows days of preparatory work by senior officials, which began on Sunday and covered social, economic, diplomatic, political, defence, and security issues. These talks were co-chaired by Zimbabwe's Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ambassador Albert Chimbindi, and his Botswana counterpart, Ambassador Thuso Ramodimoosi. Today, a tête-à-tête between Zimbabwe's Foreign Affairs Minister Professor Amon Murwira and Botswana's Minister of International Relations, Phenyo Butale, set the stage for the ministerial segment, where they will review presentations, adopt minutes, and finalise a draft joint communiqué.

In his opening remarks to the senior officials, Ambassador Chimbindi framed the BNC as a testament to an enduring friendship rooted in shared history, culture, and close familial ties, noting Zimbabwe's gratitude for Botswana's support during the liberation struggle. He highlighted practical cooperation, particularly in security, commending joint police operations that have successfully reduced stock theft along their shared borders. Ambassador Chimbindi also issued a forward-looking challenge, urging both nations to enhance people-to-people relations by easing travel, specifically by working towards allowing cross-border movement using national identity cards instead of passports.

Ambassador Ramodimoosi confirmed that several cooperation instruments are ready for signing during this BNC session, with others to be expedited. He expressed confidence that the deliberations would be constructive and focused on accelerating progress in strategic areas including agriculture, health, energy, education, tourism, infrastructure development, and border security. The session aims to deliver clear, time-bound recommendations for consideration by the ministers and the two heads of state.

Beyond the bilateral talks, President Boko's itinerary includes a key role at the 2026 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo, where he will officially open the event. The 66th edition of the ZITF, running under the theme 'Connected Economies, Competitive Industries', kicked off yesterday at the Zimbabwe Conference and Exhibition Smart City and continues until Saturday. The fair has drawn significant interest, featuring 775 exhibitors, including 49 foreign firms from 31 countries, positioning it as a major platform for trade and investment promotion in the region.

President Boko's visit and his participation in both the BNC and ZITF occur amidst a busy diplomatic period for Zimbabwe. Just yesterday, President Mnangagwa received the outgoing Russian Ambassador, Nikolai Krasilnikov, who concluded 6.5 years of service, for a courtesy call at the Munhumutapa Offices. Furthermore, the ZITF's Innovators Forum in Bulawayo featured an address by United States Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Pamela Tremont, highlighting the event's international draw and its role in fostering business and technological exchange.
