Zimbabwe has secured significant backing from Caribbean nations in its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027-2028 period. St Kitts and Nevis, Guyana, and Jamaica have all pledged their support, joining an expanding list of countries endorsing Harare’s candidature. This diplomatic momentum comes after a concerted outreach effort led by Zimbabwe’s Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Professor Amon Murwira, who is serving as President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Special Envoy.

Professor Murwira’s diplomatic mission across the Caribbean began in Saint Lucia, which offered its support early on. The tour then proceeded to Jamaica, Guyana, and St Kitts and Nevis, where formal endorsements were secured. In St Kitts and Nevis, Prof Murwira held high-level talks with Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew. The discussions not only focused on Zimbabwe’s UNSC campaign but also explored ways to deepen bilateral relations and cooperation across multiple sectors.

A key outcome of the visit to St Kitts and Nevis was the agreement to establish a Joint Permanent Commission between the two countries. This commission is intended to provide a structured framework for collaboration in priority areas such as economic development, science and technology, environmental sustainability, education, and cultural exchange. Prime Minister Drew emphasized the importance of the UNSC in promoting global peace and mutual development, affirming his country’s support for Zimbabwe’s bid.

In Guyana, Prof Murwira met with Foreign Minister Hugh Hilton Todd, reaffirming the longstanding diplomatic ties between the two nations. Both sides expressed a commitment to strengthening people-to-people connections, enhancing cultural and economic partnerships, and presenting a united front in international diplomacy. These engagements reflect a shared vision rooted in common history and aligned aspirations for future cooperation.

Following these visits, Prof Murwira proceeded to the Dominican Republic to continue high-level discussions aimed at fostering mutually beneficial partnerships. The focus of these talks includes advancing bilateral relations and shared priorities within the multilateral system, with particular attention to peace and security, trade and tourism expansion, climate resilience, and cooperation in education, science, and technology.

Zimbabwe’s outreach to the Caribbean underscores the growing significance of cross-regional alliances in shaping global governance. As the campaign for the UNSC seat progresses, these diplomatic efforts highlight Harare’s strategic engagement with diverse international partners to bolster its influence and contribute to global peace and development.
