Mnangagwa's Historic Ghana Visit Aims to Cement Economic Partnership

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Accra, Ghana, marking a historic first state visit by a Zimbabwean head of state to the West African nation. He was received at Accra International Airport with full military honours by his counterpart, President John Dramani Mahama, and a delegation including Zimbabwe's Foreign Affairs Minister Amon Murwira and Ambassador Kufa Chinoza. The visit, which included a 21-gun salute and a state banquet hosted by President Mahama, is framed as a move to elevate a relationship rooted in shared liberation history into a partnership focused on future economic prosperity.

The core of the engagement will be high-level talks at Peduase Lodge, where the two leaders and their delegations are expected to discuss strengthening cooperation in trade, health, sanitation, the fight against corruption, and tackling unemployment. These discussions will culminate in the signing and exchange of at least ten Memoranda of Understanding, with strategic agreements specifically targeting agriculture, trade, and waste management for mutual benefit. The visit gains additional diplomatic significance as it follows Ghana's recent motion at the United Nations for a resolution condemning slavery, a position Zimbabwe shares.

As part of the visit, President Mnangagwa is scheduled to tour key sites to glean insights for Zimbabwe's own development agenda. He will visit the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, a leading private specialty hospital in West Africa known for its comprehensive cancer care since 2011, as Zimbabwe upgrades facilities like Parirenyatwa and Mpilo hospitals. He is also set to tour the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant, seeking knowledge on waste management models relevant to Zimbabwe's Vision 2030 projects, such as the transformation of Harare's former Pomona dumpsite into a waste-to-energy facility.

The President's itinerary also includes a solemn stop at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, where he will lay a wreath at the tomb of Ghana's founding father. Kwame Nkrumah, who led Ghana to become the first sub-Saharan African colony to gain independence from Britain in 1957, was also instrumental in establishing the Organisation of African Unity. This act underscores the pan-African solidarity that forms the bedrock of the current diplomatic and economic push. President Mnangagwa is accompanied by a delegation including Tourism Minister Barbra Rwodzi, Chief Secretary to the President Martin Rushwaya, and Attorney General Virginia Mabiza.
