Sudanese Ambassador and Zimbabwe Parliamentary Speaker Explore Economic and Regional Cooperation

Sudanese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Ibrahim Elsheikh Ahmed held talks with Advocate Jacob Mudenda, Speaker of Zimbabwe’s National Assembly, at the Parliament building in Mt Hampden to explore ways of strengthening relations between the two countries. The discussions, which took place yesterday, focused primarily on boosting economic and trade cooperation as part of a broader agenda to deepen bilateral ties.

Ambassador Ahmed revealed that both sides are working closely with Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to prepare memoranda of understanding that will formalize and enhance cooperation. These agreements are intended to provide a structured framework for collaboration, signaling a commitment to expanding trade and economic engagement between Sudan and Zimbabwe.

The meeting also addressed the ongoing civil conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. This conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions, creating a humanitarian and security crisis. Ambassador Ahmed emphasized the importance of African-led solutions, advocating for the African Union and the Southern African Development Community to play central roles in restoring peace and stability.

Advocate Mudenda, in turn, briefed Ambassador Ahmed on Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Amendment Number 3 Bill. This legislative initiative aims to strengthen the country’s development agenda by fostering a more stable governance environment and ensuring policy continuity necessary for long-term economic transformation. The briefing highlighted Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts to create a conducive environment for sustainable growth and regional cooperation.

The engagement between the Sudanese envoy and Zimbabwe’s parliamentary leadership reflects a mutual interest in not only enhancing bilateral economic relations but also collaborating on regional peace and security challenges. As Sudan navigates its internal conflict, Zimbabwe’s role within SADC and the AU could be pivotal in supporting continental efforts to resolve such crises. The planned signing of memoranda of understanding marks a concrete step towards formalizing this partnership, with Ambassador Ahmed expressing intentions to visit Sudan soon to further cooperation.
