Zimbabwe Deepens Historical Ties with Serbia, Eyes Japanese Development Cooperation

Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri has reaffirmed Zimbabwe's commitment to partnering with progressive and like-minded nations, following courtesy calls from the Serbian and Japanese envoys at her offices. The meetings, held yesterday, focused on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring avenues for cooperation in national development and modernisation. Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri described the engagement with Serbia as particularly significant due to deep-rooted historical ties that date back to Zimbabwe's liberation struggle.

Reflecting on this shared history, the Minister detailed how Serbia provided critical assistance to freedom fighters, including training officials and supplying clothes, food, and arms. She emphasised the brotherly relationship, noting that Serbia was the first European country to open an embassy in Zimbabwe after independence. To build on this foundation, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri announced plans to soon visit Serbia to formalise cooperation through a memorandum of understanding, which is expected to open avenues in sports, agriculture, and other sectors.

Practical cooperation with Serbia is set to expand into demining operations, with Belgrade expected to play a crucial role in clearing the remaining four percent of mine-infested land in Zimbabwe. Furthermore, Serbian Ambassador Radisa Grujic reaffirmed his country's official support for Zimbabwe's bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. Ambassador Grujic expressed confidence that Zimbabwe would continue to uphold principles of international law and the UN Charter, building on growing ties since Serbia reopened its embassy in Harare nearly four years ago.

Turning to Japan, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri acknowledged Tokyo's continued support for Zimbabwe's development agenda, also highlighting its contributions to demining efforts. She noted that Japan recently provided US$7.2 million towards the clearance of remaining contaminated land. Japanese diplomat Maekawa Nobutaka confirmed his country's intent to maintain engagement with Zimbabwe across multiple areas, including education, trade, and military cooperation.

The simultaneous engagements underscore Zimbabwe's diplomatic strategy of nurturing relationships with nations that have offered consistent support, whether rooted in shared historical struggle or contemporary development partnerships. The anticipated memorandum with Serbia and the sustained Japanese funding for demining represent tangible steps in these relationships, with direct implications for national security and economic modernisation.
