The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has reiterated its dedication to remaining alert and vigilant against contemporary security threats to safeguard peace and tranquillity across the country. Lieutenant General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, Commander of the ZNA, made these remarks during the command handover of the 2 Infantry Brigade held at Kaguvi Barracks in Harare. This ceremony marked the transition of leadership from Brigadier General Million Ndlovu to Colonel Jabulani Mulambo.

Brigadier General Ndlovu, who has been reassigned as Senior Personal Staff Officer to the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, was praised for his exemplary service and the strong bonds he forged with officers, soldiers, government officials, and provincial leadership during his tenure. Colonel Mulambo, previously a Directing Staff member at the Zimbabwe National Defence University, expressed humility and honour at his new appointment and is awaiting the finalisation of his promotion to Brigadier General. He acknowledged the 2 Infantry Brigade’s reputation as a formidable formation with a solid operational record.

Lt Gen Tapfumaneyi emphasized that the ZNA and its sister security agencies are committed to creating a safe environment where both citizens and visitors can enjoy peace in Zimbabwe. He highlighted that peace and tranquillity are essential for national development and the realisation of the country’s aspirations. The commander also underscored the importance of the military’s traditions, including discipline, integrity, respect for authority, loyalty, selflessness, and professionalism, which form the foundation of an effective and cohesive army.

Addressing recent negative media coverage, Lt Gen Tapfumaneyi cautioned against the fabrication of stories that portray conspiracy theories about the army’s role. He reaffirmed the ZNA’s core mandate to defend Zimbabwe from both external and internal enemies, dismissing unfounded allegations as products of weak imagination.

The command handover ceremony also served as a reminder of the military’s culture of unity and camaraderie, with officers and soldiers gathering to dine together as part of institutional tradition. Such practices are designed to develop versatile leaders capable of managing the evolving demands of military service, both tactically and administratively.

This reaffirmation of vigilance by the ZNA comes at a time when Zimbabwe faces various challenges, including a regional alert over the spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease, which poses risks to the country’s agricultural sector. Meanwhile, other security concerns, such as substance abuse in schools, have been highlighted by Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba, who recently called for increased vigilance and responsibility among educators.

The leadership changes within the 2 Infantry Brigade and the ZNA’s renewed commitment to national security underscore the ongoing efforts by Zimbabwe’s defence forces to maintain stability and support the country’s development goals amid a complex security environment.
