Zimbabwe Strengthens Economic Defences Amid Middle East Conflict, Focuses on Mining Value Addition

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has revealed that the Zimbabwean government is actively implementing strategies to protect the country from the economic shocks triggered by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Speaking at the National Heroes Acre in Harare during the burial of national heroes Cosmas Chiringa, Elison Mupamaonde, and Major General (Retired) Herbert Chingono, the President acknowledged the far-reaching impact of the war, which pits the United States and Israel against Iran, on global markets and Zimbabwe’s economy.

The conflict has caused a notable surge in international fuel prices, which has had ripple effects across Zimbabwe’s economy. In response, the government is rolling out intervention measures aimed at cushioning ordinary citizens from these adverse effects. Among these measures are reviews of taxes and salaries, designed to alleviate the financial strain on Zimbabweans as the country navigates this period of uncertainty.

President Mnangagwa also underscored the government’s commitment to continuing the structural transformation of Zimbabwe’s economy. Central to this vision is the focus on the country’s mineral wealth, with an emphasis on processing and value addition at the source before export. This approach aims to ensure that Zimbabweans derive greater benefits from their natural resources, fostering sustainable economic growth and development.

The President called on investors and partners, particularly in the mining sector, to engage in durable and mutually beneficial collaborations that support this vision. He reiterated that his administration remains open to complementary economic relations that align with Zimbabwe’s developmental goals.

In his address, Mnangagwa paid tribute to the late national heroes, highlighting the exemplary public service of Cosmas Chiringa, who served as Permanent Secretary for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution. He urged civil servants to emulate Chiringa’s dedication, humility, and professionalism, emphasizing that public office is a mandate to serve the people with fairness and discipline.

Further, the President appealed to members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and the broader security sector to honour the legacy of the departed heroes by sharpening their capabilities in line with the country’s aspirations for modernization and industrialization. He framed their role within the context of a developing state facing hybrid threats and rapid technological changes, calling for renewed national purpose and collective responsibility.

These statements come at a critical time as Zimbabwe grapples with external economic pressures while striving to achieve its Vision 2030 goals. The government’s proactive stance on mitigating war-related economic disruptions and its focus on value addition in mining signal a strategic effort to build resilience and foster inclusive growth for Zimbabweans.
